Jingrui Liu

Always on the adventure of exploring music from early to contemporary, clarinetist Jingrui Liu is a New York-based performer. During her current years at Juilliard, Ms. Liu has played all positions in the Juilliard Orchestra, Opera, and Wind Orchestra. An avid chamber musician, Ms. Liu has performed and studied in Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s Woodwind Seminar directed by Valerie Coleman and workshops with Imani Winds original members. Recently, Ms. Liu gained a fellowship position at the Miami Music Festival, where she played all positions in the symphony orchestra and pit orchestra.

An advocate of contemporary music, Ms. Liu regularly performs in AXIOM, Juilliard’s contemporary ensemble. Performance highlights include the principal clarinet on Thomas Adès’ The Origin of the Harp and Unsuk Chin’s Akrostichon-Wortspiel. Recently, Ms. Liu performed Jörg Widmann’s Fantasie for clarinet solo in Jörg Widmann’s masterclass.

Born and raised in Beijing, China, Ms. Liu started her clarinet studies at the age of 12 with Ming Liu, the principal clarinet of the Beijing Symphony Orchestra. In 2019, Ms. Liu was accepted to The Tianjin Juilliard School Pre-College Division, where she studied with Xiangyu Zhou and became the first student to graduate from the school. Ms. Liu is pursuing her Bachelor of Music degree at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Charles Neidich.
