Originally from California and raised in New York, clarinetist Ju Young Yi recently received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, studying with Michael Wayne.
Prior to Eastman, Ju Young attended the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College on full scholarship. Her accomplishments include first prize at the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York Concerto Competition, New York Artists International Competition, and New York International Music Concours, second prize at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Chamber Music Competition, and a semifinalist of the Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center’s Young Musicians Program. Ju Young has also been featured on NYC’s Classical Music radio station: WQXR Young Artists Showcase, with her pre-college chamber group and orchestra. In addition, she was the recipient of the D. Stanley Hasty Memorial Scholarship at the Eastman School of Music. In 2022, she received the Verdehr Trio Chamber Music Award, where she and her trio members curated a recital, performing pieces commissioned by the Verdehr Trio.
Ju Young has been a member of the New York String Orchestra Seminar in 2020 and 2022. In addition, she has been a participant at the Maine Chamber Music Seminar from 2021-2022, working with musicians such as the Akropolis Reed Quintet and Claire Chase. She has also participated in masterclasses with renowned clarinetists such as Anthony McGill, Alan Kay, Afendi Yusuf, and David Howard.
An advocate for the arts, Ju Young received her Arts Leadership Program Certificate at the Eastman School of Music and was the 2023 Editor of Sigma Alpha Iota, Sigma Theta Chapter.
